Design and material quality

If we have to define the design language of ugee S640 in one word, it would be simple and practical.

The front part of the tablet has a row of shortcut buttons up top, followed by a drawing area in the middle, and finally you have the ugee branding at the bottom.

Turning the tablet to its back, you can see there is a large silicon strip at the top and bottom. It provides grip to the tablet and helps it stay in place on smooth surfaces.

On the top edge, there is a USB port at the center, followed by a lanyard hole and a pen holder.

Also, it may not be evident from the photographs, but the ugee S640 drawing surface has a slight slope. The tablet is a little taller from the top and narrow from the bottom.

Sloped surface on ugee S640

It results in the drawing surface being gradually sloped which improves the drawing comfort of the tablet.

The ugee S640 is made thoroughly out of plastic, which is expected at this price range – but the good thing is the quality of the construction, the fit and finish of the tablet is top notch.

The buttons are of high quality, nothing shakes or wiggles on touching, and there are no noises coming from the inside when shaken – making it feel like a well-put-together pen tablet.

Next, coming to styling – the ugee S640 is available in 3 different color options, named – Coral, Carbon black, and Peri.

Dimensions and drawing surface

Looking at the size of the tablet, you do not have to worry about carrying it with you. You can literally put it inside any main compartment of your backpack.

Its dimensions measures 215.3 x 162.53 x 12.06 mm (8.47 x 6.39 x 0.47 inches).

The active drawing area on ugee S640 is 6.3 x 4 inches.

As you can see from the dimensions, the tablet is incredibly thin measuring just 12 mm in thickness.

When newer artists buy drawing tablets, they are not aware of the fact that the ideal size of the drawing tablet depends on the size of their monitor.

The 6.3 x 4 inches drawing area is perfect when working with laptop displays ranging from 13 inches to 16 inches.

But if you are someone who uses a larger external monitor, we highly recommend a larger tablet size such as ugee S1060 which measures 10 x 6.27 inches in working area size.

Textured surface of ugee S640

To protect the tablet from getting scratched by the stylus pointed tip, the tablet comes with a textured scratch-resistant surface.

The textured surface has microscope irregularities which provide a little friction while drawing (just like a piece of paper provides friction to the pencil). It results in better handling while drawing.

The textured surface also results in a satisfying scratchy sound while drawing.

ugee S640 battery-free stylus

After using the ugee S640 stylus for a few weeks, I realized it is one of the better styluses on the market. I can confidently say it stands tall on all the benchmarks.

The ugee S640 stylus is a battery-free pen that works by wirelessly transferring power from the tablet surface. Meaning you never have to recharge it and it is always ready for work.

It comes with 8192 levels of pressure sensitivity as well as tilt detection.

The stylus has an overall straight cylindrical shape, and since it does not have batteries inside, it is also lightweight.

While using the stylus I noticed that – maybe due to its light weight or the fact that it is completely made out of plastic, the pen felt a little cheap. But again for the price, it is not fair to expect metallic parts.

But the good news is the stylus covers up its cheap feel by proving to be an excellent performer when it comes to practical uses.

Buttons on the stylus

There are two shortcut buttons located on the side of the stylus. These buttons are fully programmable and allow you to set them to any shortcut of your choice.

For easy access, the buttons are slightly raised above the surface of the pen. On pressing, the buttons give good tactile feedback.

By default, one of the buttons is set to right-click, and the second button is set to switch between pen and eraser.

Stylus performance

The stylus is the most important feature to consider when buying a drawing tablet.

It was not that long ago when only styluses of high-end drawing tablets were good and budget tablets came with a mediocre stylus that couldn’t even draw consistent straight lines.

But thankfully, with newer generation tablets – that is not the case anymore.

The straightness of the line, the smooth taper at the end of the strokes, stroke consistency and breakages, and pressure inconsistencies are some of the things you should be closely observing and avoiding when getting a drawing tablet.

Here are some sample strokes indicating the overall performance of the stylus.

The pressure sensitivity works flawlessly and is very receptive to light changes in pressure, giving you better control over the lines drawn.

With a report rate of 220 RPS (reports per second), you don’t see any lag between you drawing the strokes and the lines appearing on the display.

Overall, you are getting a really capable stylus, especially at this low price, this alone is a good enough reason to buy the ugee S640.

Pen holder flap

To avoid the stylus potentially rolling off the desk while it is not in use, the tablet comes with a pen holder loop.

The pen holder is located at the top edge of the tablet and works as a storage space for your stylus.

Programmable buttons on the tablet

When you are working on drawing/design or any creative application, you know these softwares always comes with keyboard shortcuts.

While drawing there are a handful of shortcuts that you frequently use every now and then.

The ugee S640 comes with a total of 10 programmable shortcut buttons. These buttons are located above the drawing area.

You can set these buttons to function like zoom, pan, scroll, grab, color picker, switch between brush and eraser, and change the size of brushes.

Having easy access to these common keyboard shortcuts via buttons on the tablet makes your drawing process faster, more engaging, and convenient.

As I mentioned, these buttons are fully programmable and can be set to any shortcut of your choice.

The buttons work with all drawing and non-drawing-related applications on your computer. You can even have a completely different set of shortcuts for each individual application.

The button themselves are clicky and tactile and feels high quality.

Connectivity – How to connect ugee S640 to the computer

The ugee S640 comes with a handy USB-C to USB-A cable measuring 5 feet (1.5 meters) in length.

The USB-C end of the cable is L-Shaped and connects to the tablet, whereas the USB-A end connects to your computer.

For folks whose laptops only have USB-C ports, you can use the included USB-A to USB-C adapter to connect the cable to your computer.

In order for your tablet to work, you also need to download the free tablet driver from the ugee website.

This tablet is also available in another variant the ugee S640W which gives you wireless connectivity.

Driver and settings

On installing the driver, it automatically detects when you connect the tablet to the computer.

The driver gives you settings and customization options to set the tablet as per your needs.

It gives you options such as to set the tablet area and screen area plus this is where you reprogram the buttons of the tablet to the shortcuts of your choice.

On the stylus side of things, you can change the two buttons on the pen as well as change the pressure sensitivity.

Android connection

In addition to working on Windows, Mac, Chromebooks, and Linux, this tablet also comes with support for Android.

Meaning you can use this tablet with your Android smartphones and tablets.

In fact, ugee S640 is the ideal tablet for artists who use pen tablets with their Android devices.

The reason being – the ugee S640 allows you to use its full drawing area with Android devices, unlike other pen tablets which only let you use a small portion of their total drawing area – with Android devices.

Final Thoughts ugee S640 pen tablet – Excellent features, the best value for money

Looking at the price and the overall dimension ugee S640 seems like a beginner device, but considering the features it offers, especially how good the stylus is – it doesn’t feel fair to call it a beginner tablet.

You get way more than what you are paying for making it one of the most value-for-money pen tablets in this price segment.

The design and layout are good, the build quality is excellent, the drawing area is adequate for use with laptops, the pen performance is above its league plus you get everything you need to get started including the adapters.

If you are looking for a pocket-friendly pen tablet whether for yourself or as a gift for someone – the ugee S640 is the right choice.
