Kipsiro leads glory quest in sports awards

Kampala MOSES Kipsiro will start as the outright favourite when Uganda’s sports press converge at Shoprite/Game, Lugogo this evening to crown the uganda telecom/USPA Sports Personality of the Year 2007. The uganda telecom/USPA sports gala has become the byword for splendour in the business of awards ceremonies, and sports journalists will be joined by the country’s glitterati to witness the most dominant sports performer being crowned from an impressive list of five. Kipsiro won the gold medal in the 5000m in the All Africa Games in Algiers last year –– in which Uganda’s other representatives posted dismal performances –– and then added a bronze medal over the same distance in the World Athletics Championships in Osaka, Japan. But Kipsiro will have to contend with no-less significant opposition from Uganda Cranes and Kaizer Chiefs winger David Obua, clubman rally champion female driver Susan Muwonge, the Rugby Cranes and Uganda’s national cricketers. Obua played a starring role in the Cranes ultimately vain attempt to qualify for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations; Muwonge showed admirable bravado to ruffle feathers in a male-dominated sport; the valiant Rugby Cranes won the Confederation of Africa Rugby (CAR) Cup in style; while the cricketers have been nominated for their victory in the Division III World Cricket League in Australia. The gala starts at 6pm, and the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Ssekandi, will be the guest of honour.
