$200m (sh334b) loan from the World Bank to
finance its poverty reduction programme.
The deputy secretary to the
Treasury, Keith Muhakanizi, said the funds were meant for roads, water,
agriculture, health and free primary and secondary education. The money is a
reduction from previous years. Uganda
used to receive $150m a year for its anti-poverty plan.

Secondary schools countrywide have raised the schools fees for next term following the recent increase in food prices. Most head teachers yesterday said their management committees had approved the new fees structure at the end of last term.

A mother and her two children were burnt to death in Nyabubare, Bushenyi district when unknown attackers beat them up and set their hut ablaze on Tuesday. Their father, Kasim Katagira, escaped from the burning grass-thatched hut with several cuts inflicted on his head by the attackers.

A CANADIAN firm, Magnus International Resources, has signed an earn-in agreement with Canmin-Gold Ltd, a subsidiary of IBI to explore gold in Ibanda district.
The firm specialises in identifying, acquiring and developing precious and base metal properties.
“The Ibanda exploration license fits the company’s strategy of acquiring and developing projects in areas that demonstrate potential for quality gold deposits,” Gavin Conway, the vice president for exploration, commented.

Lusaka - Zambia's ruling party has sacked a top official who publicly accused President Levy Mwanawasa of nepotism in the appointment of his cabinet, a party spokesperson said on Wednesday.
Christine Moonga, a member of the national executive committee, was purged from the ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) late on Tuesday after a meeting of senior party members found her guilty of "gross indiscipline".
