Chengdu - Thirty-seven tourists were killed when their coach was buried by a landslide after a catastrophic earthquake hit China and another 2 000 are unaccounted for, state media said on Tuesday. The tourists were travelling in Sichuan province in southwest China when the devastating quake struck, the official Xinhua news agency said, quoting local emergency authorities.

Khartoum - Sudan's official news agency has quoted the defence minister as saying that more than 200 people were killed in a rebel assault on the capital. Sudanese Defence Minister General Abdul Rahim Mohammed Hussein has told parliament on Tuesday that 93 soldiers and 13 policemen were killed repelling Saturday's unprecedented assault by rebels from Darfur's Justice and Equality Movement. Another 30 civilians died in the fighting, he said.

ONE of the leading packaging material manufacturers has laid off 200 workers due to a fall in production to 20%, a top official has said. Gideon Bagadawa, the Uganda Manufacturers Association chief, who declined to name the company, attributed the lay-off to imported polythene bags and other packaging materials from Kenya.

REMITTANCES by Ugandans working abroad have reached $800m annually, a senior economist with the International Labour Organisation, has said.
Dr. Vali Jamal indicated that the workers, popularly known as kyeyo, contribute 20% to the economy. Jamal was speaking during the migration, diaspora and development lecture at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala recently.

Tumusiime Mutebile, the central bank governor, has urged the public to use the credit reference bureau services to boost financial lending services in the economy. “Until now, it has not been easy for lenders to accurately assess the overall credit worthiness of borrowers in the financial sector,” Mutebile remarked.

KAYUNGA-Women suffering from uncontrolled leaking of urine and stool due to childbirth complications are undergoing free operations at Kayunga Hospital. The hospital administrator, Salim Kivejinja, on Friday told journalists that women with the condition called obstetric fistula would be treated between May 12 and 16 at the camp was organised by the health ministry.
