he Ugandan army says it has killed two Congolese rebels who tried to attack a border trading post. About 20 armed men entered from eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and tried to loot a trading center in Kisoro in south-west Uganda. The army said the men were part of a group headed by dissident General Laurent Nkunda.

Double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius has won an appeal to compete for a place in the Beijing Olympics. In January, athletics' governing body the IAAF banned the 21-year-old South African from able-bodied events. It was claimed Pistorius' prosthetic limbs give him an unfair advantage, but he disagreed and went to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas).

Paris - A court in Versailles, near Paris, has charged an 11-year-old boy and his 12-year-old friend with raping the older boy's 10-year-old sister, filming the scene on a cellphone and showing it to friends, the website of the weekly Le Point reported on Friday.

Kampala - A 30-year-old python housed in a Ugandan animal conservation centre has hatched 40 offspring, newspaper reports said on Friday but wildlife officials later said that the young reptiles will be released into the wild as the large group cannot be maintained.

Rangoon - Myanmar said on Friday more than 133 000 people were dead or missing in the cyclone disaster, with the huge increase due to difficulties in confirming the figures earlier, state television reported. It said 77 738 were dead and 55 917 missing - with 19 359 people injured.

The US ambassador to Zimbabwe warned post-election violence is "spinning out of control", as the government set a date for a second-round run-off.
James McGee told the BBC he had found evidence of "politically-inspired" violence against hundreds of people. The diplomat warned the situation made it impossible for the second vote, set for 27 June, to be fair.

The central bank has issued a 500m Zimbabwe dollar banknote, worth US$2, to try to ease cash shortages amid the world's highest rate of inflation.
The previous highest denomination note was for Z$250m, issued 10 days ago. Meanwhile, the opposition has rejected the move to delay the presidential run-off, possibly until July, saying it was a government ploy to stay in power.

NEW harvests have started flowing into Kampala’s major markets but prices are unlikely to go down, a weekly survey has shown. Robert Mugisa, a trader at Nakasero Market, said prices remained stable. Simsim and groundnuts sell at sh2,500 a kilo, the same as last week.
Maize flour sells at sh1,400, beans and peas at sh1,500 a kilo, unchanged from last week.

THE law on adultery is being amended to equally apply to men and women, the state minister for labour has said.
Mwesigwa Rukutana said the amendments were a result of the Constitutional Court ruling that declared the law discriminatory against women.
