Government is in the process of amending the electoral laws to allow the announcement of Presidential elections to be done after a week as opposed to 48 hours after the polls close. This was disclosed by the Minister of Justice and Constructional Affairs and Attorney General Dr. Khiddu Makubuya.

Bujumbura - Burundi's main gay and lesbian rights groups expressed outrage on Saturday following the adoption by parliament of a new set of laws criminalising homosexuality. The Association for the Respect of Homosexuals' Rights (ARDHO) protested against the new penal law adopted overnight, which abolishes the death penalty but makes homosexuality a criminal offence.

With less than three years to the 2011 presidential and parliamentary elections, outspoken justice of the Supreme Court George Kanyeihamba wants the armed forces to distance themselves from direct involvement in the electoral process.

The Uganda People’s Congress emergency delegates’ conference aimed at amending the party’s constitution has registered disagreements over the party presidents’ term limit and powers.The party has been operating under its 1965 constitution which gives the party president autonomous powers to make decisions without consulting party members and spells out a seven year term for the president in office. This, the delegates say contravenes the 1995 constitution which is the supreme law of the land.

Nairobi - The British navy on Tuesday handed over to the Kenyan authorities eight suspected Somali pirates captured during an incident at sea a week earlier, British Armed Forces Minister Bob Ainsworth said.
