Enterprise choice is crucial - Museveni

President Yoweri Museveni, who is currently on a tour of Rukungiri district to sensitise wananchi on the Prosperity for All programme, has revealed that lack of proper enterprise selection is the main cause of underdevelopment in Uganda, as per information provided by Uganda media Center. He, therefore, called for extensive agriculture for wananchi who have large tracts of land and intensive farming for those with small pieces. The President was yesterday addressing a public rally at Rwamagaya Primary School in Burombe Parish of Ruhinda Sub-County. The Prosperity for All programme aims at increased household incomes and formation of Savings and Credit Co-operative Associations (SACCOs).

Mr. Museveni said that Shs.800 million is now available to Rukungiri district to facilitate 6 families per parish that will be selected to serve as role models in farming. He called for commercial farming to eradicate poverty and encouraged residents to join (SACCOs).

He urged the people of the area to diversify production activities using modern methods of farming to enable each family earn at least Shs.20 million per annum. He said that poultry, dairy farming and bee-keeping, among other activities, are good enterprises. He also appealed to the youth to concentrate on their studies and avoid being lured into immoral acts that could cost them life if attacked by HIV/AIDS.

The President promised residents of the area electric power from Kashenshero in neighbouring Bushenyi district to Ruhinda and Buhunga Sub-Counties in Rukungiri district. He also gave assurance that Ruhinda Sub-County will get more water boreholes. He told the rally that mass immunization, UPE, USE, democracy and now PFA are some of the many successful development programmes by the NRM government.

On corruption, the President said that the vice is a great threat to the fight against poverty. He also warned teachers who stubbornly continue to levy fees on UPE and USE beneficiaries that they will be apprehended and imprisoned because they are violating the law.
