Mulago to start hip and knee replacement operations.

Mulago University Hospital is to start a replacement procedure mainly in the hip and knee joints. This is intended to save Ugandans from the expensive journeys abroad in search of treatment. Dr. Fredrick Mutyaba and Tito Bayeza of the Uganda orthopedic Association revealed this in Kampala . He says the first orthopedic joint repel cement was done in the late 1980s by Dr. Money, but serious training of orthopedic doctors started in 1994. More doctors have been trained and the centre intends to introduce the art of joint replacements.

Beyeza says before the conducting the operations, Uganda orthopedic Association has organized a seminar for all stakeholders and experts from Kenya at Hotel Africana on 24 th October 2008 to re-orient doctors on joint replacement techniques.

Thereafter, hip and knee joint replacement operations will be conducted from 25 to 27th October at Mulago Hospital . The expenses involved in treatment abroad will now be reduced because the association has acquired the implants for the replacements. It is therefore good news that the service is now available in Uganda .
