Ugandans to have national ID cards by 2010

ruhakana_rugunda_5.jpgUGANDANS will be forced to carry national ID cards by 2010. The same cards will be used for national elections and immigration purposes. Ruhakana Rugunda the minister for internal Affairs has anounced in the capital Kampala.

 

Other projects announced by the minister include a communications system for border control, an automation system for computerising all data concerning migration, and a resource centre.

The British government is part funding the projects to the tune of $260,000 and supported by the International Organisation of Migration (IOM).Rugunda said national identification will improve Uganda’s capacity to detect criminal elements, including terrorists.
“Using the new equipment, we can easily stop these bad elements since we can effectively communicate to 40 of our border posts, except Gulu,” he said.
