Swiss Tourist fined for racist rants in Kenya |
|
Nairobi - A Kenyan court fined a Swiss tourist 10 000 shillings (about R1 100) for calling two policemen "black monkeys", Daily Metro newspaper reported on Friday. Valentine Buchli paid the fine after being convicted on Thursday for breaching public peace by using the comment in the coastal town of Kilifi in October last year.
"In future, this court will take serious action against such offenders," magistrate Peter Kiama warned.
The newspaper said Buchli had flagged down the two officers and started
hurling abuse, including the "black monkeys" slur, without provocation.
Kenya has no specific law against racism and it is argued that it is
high time rules were enacted to deal with this blatant type of racism
and prejudice.
