Kampala roads in very bad state again
uganda_roads3.jpgKampala City Council has embarked on a city road tour drive with shocking revelations of shoddy work done by contractors. The roads toured are under the road fund project but remain in a sorry state. Despite the recently reported economic growth of Uganda registered in the last financial year at 9.8%, the country's infrastructure development remains a challenge. KCC officials have now embarked on a drive to inspect all the roads under the road fund project to identify shoddy work.

The tour revealed shocking sights as manhole covers provoked questions about the work done by contractors. Residents have aggravated the situation as they continue to dump garbage into the drainage system, which has led to blockage of the drainage systems in the city.

The residents are equally unhappy about the substandard work done by contractors. The deputy Mayor Florence Namyanja who led the inspection team, threatened to discontinue some of the contractors if the roads are not redone to the required standard.

In a bid to launch an assault on the road sector in the next financial year of 2008/2009, the government has allocated 1.1 trillion shillings to cater for the infrastructure in the country. This amount is expected to raise the standard of the country's road network and maintenance.
