| Ugandan Kyeyo net $1b a year for Uganda |

REMITTANCES by Ugandans working abroad have reached $800m annually, a senior economist with the International Labour Organisation, has said. Dr. Vali Jamal indicated that the workers, popularly known as kyeyo, contribute 20% to the economy. Jamal was speaking during the migration, diaspora and development lecture at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala recently. He said kyeyo seekers contribute an equivalent to 70% of Uganda’s exports. Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, the premier, said a minimum wage cannot be set due to the many job seekers. |
