Family Burnt To Death, Bushenyi
hut_fire.jpgA mother and her two children were burnt to death in Nyabubare, Bushenyi district when unknown attackers beat them up and set their hut ablaze on Tuesday. Their father, Kasim Katagira, escaped from the burning grass-thatched hut with several cuts inflicted on his head by the attackers.

Police said the two children identified as Kyojo, 3, and 18-month-old Bonde were burnt beyond recognition, while their mother, Sarah Katagira, 26, died in Ishaka Hospital.

Bushenyi district chief of criminal investigations Stanley Owor said Sarah, who was due to give birth, died after an operation to remove the foetus. Owor said Katagira was admitted to Mbarara Hospital in critical condition.

The Police said Katagira’s three brothers living in a nearby house were also hacked with a panga. Chris Kwatagye and Hassan Muhebwe were admitted to Ishaka Hospital. The third brother, Shaban Mbahweze, escaped from the house through a window, Owor said.

Neighbours said Sarah, wrapped in a blanket, was found crawling through the door of the burning hut. The LCI chairman, Stephen Bagira, said the attack took place at around midnight.

“We heard noise at night and to our shock, we found our neighbours’ hut ablaze.”

Neighbours suspect the attack could have been a result of a land wrangle between Katagira and some of his relatives. Owor urged the community to report any person they suspect to have been involved in the attack.

Nyabubare councilor Joab Tumwesigye said insecurity in the area was worsening, adding that most youth smoked marijuana and indulged in gambling all day.

He cited several recent murders in the area and appealed to the Police to
sensitise the community on fighting insecurity.
