Death of children likely to rise
mutagamba_maria_1.jpgTHE number of children dying of diseases related to poor sanitation and hygiene is likely to go up. The Uganda minister for lands, water and environment, Maria Mutagamba, revealed this at the launch of the evaluation sanitation campaign in Kampala recently.

She said globally, 6,000 children die everyday due to diseases related to poor sanitation. Mutagamba said sanitation in Kampala was appalling. She said there was need to access sanitation facilities if the millennium development goals were to be achieved.

“Sanitation is the foundation of health, dignity and development,” Mutagamba noted.

The campaign, spearheaded by Water Aid, aims at advocating the prioritisation of sanitation. The United Nations declared 2008 as the year for sanitation. It urged the global community to engage in activities that promote sanitation.
