Chamber to build complex in Kampala

THE Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry is to construct a multi-billion complex to house the national secretariat. Frank Olok, the acting chief executive officer, said last week that the construction of the new home in Kamwokya, a city suburb, was expected to commence soon.

He said the building would be ready before the end of the year. “We are working on the designs with the contractors. We expect to occupy it by the end of the,” Olok said.

He disclosed that the modern office block would offer the business community a good working environment.

“With this acquisition, our range of services to the business community will improve. It is also important that the Chamber has its own home,” he said.

The Chamber is mandated with the promotion, coordination and protection of trade, commercial and industrial interests of the business community.

Olok explained that to achieve these objectives and serve the interests of the business community better, the national secretariat was recently restructured to strengthen its human resource and facilities for effective execution of its duties. Last year, the Chamber also unveiled a new logo and a three-year strategic plan.

These led to the birth of the membership, lobbying and advocacy, business development services and public relations departments.

“With the membership department in place, we will this month start a countrywide tour of all our branch offices with the objective of conducting on-spot assessments of the current status of the branches, update them with secretariat news and membership lists. We shall also conduct branch elections where necessary,” Olok said.
