CELTEL Uganda is to face almost
double the cost of the Akon concert that has been postponed to May 9 because
Akon suffered from a sore throat.
“We are still negotiating with other
people like the management of the cricket oval where the show was to take
place.”
The agency manages Celtel’s public
relations issues.
Jasper Aligawesa, the general
secretary of the National Sports Council, said the sh40m deal, which the
council had with the telecommunications firm, expired last Friday.
“We understand their problem and
look forward to a new contract,” Aligawesa said.
Celtel also met the fares of the
foreign technical team, which will again be flown back for Friday’s show.
“The equipment, which was brought in
from South Africa and Kenya will
remain under tight security,” Masaba said.
He added that the stage structure
would remain in place to cut costs.
The winner of the Live like a Star
promotion, Samuel Behumuka, who was airlifted from Mubende to Kampala, was flown back.
“A flight to Mubende in a chattered
chopper costs $6,500 (sh10.8m),” said Ian Mugambe, Celtel’s marketing executive
of core product services. If Behumuka is flown back to Kampala this Friday,
Celtel would have paid sh43.2m for his trips.
Caesar Mloka, Celtel’s marketing
director, said over sh1b was spent on promoting the show.
Celtel assured Ugandans that there
would not be a hike in the price of the tickets. It also urged the public to
keep the tickets of flopped show, saying they were still valid.
A premium ticket costs sh250,000,
gold sh125,000 and silver sh30,000.
