Uganda’s most respected companies have been recognised, with a call on Ugandans to make the pursuit of excellenc the guiding principle of corporate and public management.
Nation Media Group & PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) conducted the East Africa's Most Respected Companies Survey 2007.
The categories included financial services, hotels and tourism
services, agriculture, manufacturing, public sector entities,
telecommunications and Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
and emerging enterprises.
MTN was voted the most respected company in Uganda in the telecommunications and ICT category.
Other companies recognised were: Kampala Serena Hotel, Celtel Uganda,
Kenya Airways, East African Breweries Ltd and Bidco (U) Ltd.
Monitor Publications Ltd Managing Director Tom Mshindi, handed over
certificates and trophies to the top executives of the companies on
behalf of NMG at a dinner in Kampala on Friday.
"We believe as the main sponsors that what this award has been able to
do is to introduce an element of competition and to challenge us in
the corporate sector to put excellence at forefront of the way we do
things," Mr Mshindi said.
"With the success of the East Africa's most respected company's survey,
we hope that we are sending the right signals to the political leaders
of this country to try to inject excellence in the management of public
affairs."
A top MTN official said the company would invest $100 million (Shs172 billion) in 2008.
The company's Chief Commercial Officer, Mr Erik Van Veen, said the
investment would go into network expansion, upgrading of their systems
and service centres particularly in the rural areas.
"It is expansion, expansion and expansion. It is the third year we have
been here. So it is a privilege for us to win," Mr Veen said.
"We had a busy and challenging year and we will have a busy year next
year. My apologies to everybody for the network interruptions."
National Water and Sewerage Corporation was voted the best managed
public sector entity in the country. "You can’t win because you the
director. We are winning because of the spirit and commitment of all
our workers," said Dr William Muhairwe, the managing director.
Mr Mshindi also welcomed Rwanda's move to allow free movement of people
and goods, saying it would boost the growth potential of the region as
a whole.
Safaricom the telecommunications company based in Kenya, was voted the most respected company in the region.
