Uganda to host Global Agricultural Forum |
UGANDA will host the 10th World Agricultural Forum (WAF) next year. This will be the first ever WAF congress to be held outside St. Louis in the USA, the headquarters of the organisation. The forum president, Raymond Cesca, who has been in Uganda for a five-day visit, yesterday said the meeting would be held from September 3 to 5 in Kampala.
At least 200 participants, including heads of States, are expected to
attend the summit. Cesca said Uganda was chosen to host the meeting
following a presentation by the agriculture minister, Eng. Hillary
Onek, during a meeting in May in the USA.
“Onek gave a presentation on the needs of agriculture, on not only in
the Ugandan perspective, but also on Africa’s point of view. He did a
marvellous job in defining and describing the needs of the region.”
Cesca noted that Onek later contacted President Yoweri Museveni who invited the forum officials to Uganda.
“When we met President Museveni in August, he accepted to host the
congress.” The forum will foster open discussions about the Africa’s
timely agricultural topics.
The primary goal is to form more effective partnerships between the
participants who represent governments, food producers, corporations,
academia and non-governmental organisations.
The participants will include decision-makers and leaders responsible
for agricultural policy-making, political and business leaders.
They will exchange information on agriculture, with particular emphasis
on sustainability and the need for changes in the world trade policy to
enable farmers in developing countries have fair access to world
markets, Cesca.
