Chamber of Commerce to avail Computers to all District Offices.
ugandanational_chamber_of_commerce2.jpgThe Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UNCCI) plans to equip all districts with information and communications and information technology. The development will allow the districts to communicate directly with the secretariat in Kampala.

Olive Kigongo, the UNCCI president, told delegates during an annual general meeting at Hotel Equatoria in Kampala recently that all regions were expected to be fully computerised by the end of next year. “This will enable the secretariat to easily forward information like business opportunities, trade fairs and exhibitions abroad and inward missions for the promotion of trade,” Kigongo explained.
Kigongo lauded the Government, SIDA and Islamic Development Bank for the support to the chamber .

She said support had helped the chamber build capacity to strengthen institution.

“I am confident that the benefits of those events will be far reaching and in particular will benefit the business community,” she said.

She said this year, the chamber had also been able to achieve a number of advocacy initiatives that had directly benefited the members, including resolving the crisis of the vendors at Nakasero Market.

Kigongo asked the Government to analyse why there was still limited impact at the enterprise level.

“We are aware that the Government and the donor community have invested tremendous efforts and resources in the development of the private sector. But why is there still limited impact at the enterprise level?,” she asked.

Serapio Rukundo, tourism state minister, urged the chamber to show that it was a true bridge between businesses and the people and a link between businesses and the Government.

“In this era of globalisation, the chamber should also show that it can link the businesses to other institutions such as banks and other nations through their chambers.

“The chamber should be an organisation of businesspeople capable of striking a balance between their interests and those of the people they serve.

“This determination should begin with a constitution which guarantees members’ rights rather than usurping them,” Rukundo added.
